From Lisbon to the Douro Valley to the Algarve, our Portugal travel itinerary was never short of beautiful sights! We loved the different feel of each region and the friendliness of all of the people that we met! It has the best sandy beaches, a rugged coastline filled with nooks to enjoy the sunshine, beautiful cities full of stunning architecture and azulejos (tiles) that it’s no wonder this country has become a recent hot spot! Most importantly, I suggest on filling up on pasteís de nata at every opportunity, especially from my favorite spot, Manteigaria.
Joel and I headed to Portugal for our honeymoon. We wanted a destination we both had never been to, but in short flying distance from Rome. We landed in Lisbon and started our vacation there. We opted to just do one night in the city at the beginning of our trip. So the next day, our trip officially started. We headed north of Lisbon about 45 minutes to the gorgeous Areias do Seixo. We loved the modern mixed with wood elements that this hotel boasts. Our room was spectacular with an outdoor shower, complete with a beautiful olive tree in the middle. The hotel is right on the coast, so every morning we had a wonderful walk to the beach. The food and the beach cabana options were also a fun way to spend a beach day.
Next we drove farther north to the Douro Valley - the country's wine region. Joel and I aren't really big drinkers, but we thought that the terrain and accommodations were stunning. We were looking for a place to just chill with the option of activities if we wanted to do something.
We headed next allllll the way south to the Algarve. I grew up on the beach, so that classic beach atmosphere is where I feel at home. The Algarve was nothing short of rugged terrain, lots of people soaking up vitamin-d and amazing sea food.
Our last stop takes us back to Lisbon. While I do love a beach, I also always love a bustling city, specifically a European city. Outdoor cafes and picnics are the norm and finding an open chair on the boardwalk is the best place to watch the sunset.
